Fred Astaire - 1899-1987
Biography

The life and times
of Fred Astaire

May 10, 1899 - June 22, 1987

He was born on May 10 in Omaha, Nebraska, 1899. and given the name, Frederick Austerlitz. It wasn't until 1904, when he and his sister first played a vaudeville stage in New Jersey, that Fred Astaire came to be. He had already been known by Fred (or Freddie) most of his life and the name Astaire, chosen by his mother, was his grandmother's (on his father's side) maiden name. The name change came about because Austerlitz "wouldn't look good on theatre bills."

Though Fred Astaire danced with many women, there can be no doubt, in anyone's mind, that he and Ginger Rogers were the best together. Sure others danced better than Ginger or sang better, but none of them had the chemistry with Fred that she did. Here they are together in the the best (in my humble opinion) movie they did together, Swing Time.

Fred and Ginger in Swing Time (RKO, 1936)

Fred and Ginger worked together in 10 films from 1933 to 1949, though most people, myself included, wish that there could have been many more. Those 10 movies were:

Flying Down to Rio - 1933
The Gay Divorcee - 1934
Roberta - 1934
Top Hat - 1935
Follow the Fleet - 1936
Swing Time - 1936
Shall We Dance? - 1937
Carefree - 1938
The Story of Vern & Irene Castle - 1939
The Barkleys of Broadway - 1949

In all, Fred Astaire made over 40 movies, both musicals and dramas, performed in 16 television shows, and he began his theatre career as a triple-threat on the stage with his sister, Adele.

Fred Astaire was once chosen as the "Entertainer of the Century" with almost thirty years left before the millennium and I couldn't agree more. Because now that the year 2000 is almost upon us, there has yet to be any performer that comes close. To me, Fred Astaire was a hero - the consummate song and dance man - the person who I most wanted to be like. When I danced, I tried to dance like Fred. I don't know that I ever, ever really succeeded, but I sure as heck tried.

If you want to know more about the amazing Fred Astaire, you can read his autobiography, Steps in Time, or the many other books written about his life and career. Also, most of his movies are out on video and there are many CDs with Fred singing songs from his movies and many other great old tunes.
