Origins of the family name Wilson
There are early records showing this family
name in 1324, when a Robert Wilson was
listed in the Wakeman Rolls in Yorkshire;
also a Robert Wilson lived in Yorkshire in 1341.

It was only during the 11th Century that the use of surnames was introduced to the British Isles by the
Normans. They were usually local, describing the
place where the person lived or was born, patronymic
("son of"), a trade or profession, or a nickname.

Wilson come from two origins; firstly as a patronymic name meaning "son of Wil" (i.e. William); in addition, there are places in both Devon and Leicestershire called Wilson, so it would also  have been a local surname.

It is the family name of the Barons Moran and the Barons Nunburnholme. The ancient family motto was SEMPER VIGILANS, meaning: "Always on the look out."
